Why Have A Leash?

A pet peeve that I have is dogs that are not leashed in an area that is not specified as a non leash area.  The leash provides an important element of safety:  for your dog, for you and for others.  If your dog is not on a leash, he may run out into the street and be hit by a car, or he can run over to a person who is walking a dog and a bite can occur to the person or the other dog.  There is usually a leash law and usually that law specifies a six foot leash.  So if your dog is off leash, and not on your own property, it is illegal.  Also, I might add, that having the dog on a long leash, rather than on a six foot one is not compliant with leash laws.   The law is for everyone’s safety.  Perhaps your own dog is friendly, but the other person’s dog is not!  People want the dog to stay with them.  However, a child may be told over and over not to cross the street, but can we be assured that the child will never cross the street?  Absolutely not!  So why do we expect a dog to make a better choice than a human?  To keep everyone safe, keep your dog on a leash unless you are in a leash free area.
